So, I bought three black shirts from The Gap, intending them for my twenty pieces, and so far, two of the hems have unraveled on the bottom and one got a hole in a shoulder seam after just three wears. I can fix it pretty easily, but I’m annoyed. With a sticker price of 20 bucks for a black cotton t-shirt, seems like the seams should be able to stick together for a few months, let alone weeks. My new pencil skirt also unraveled at the seam. Again, easy to fix, annoyed that I have to.
Have you guys seen Crazy, Stupid Love? I hadn’t until last night, but there’s a pretty great man-makeover scene in which one character tells the other two bits of advice about updating his look: He can be completely well dressed with only 16 key pieces, and he needs to consider himself too good for certain retailers. “Be better than The Gap, Cal.”
I’m starting to agree with both.
Maybe someone wants to tell you not to buy new clothes? I have some basic pieces from esprit and those look good forever. On dress I wear a lot is already 10 years old!
I had been a Gap loyalist for a long time- probably since high school. The past two years, however, have been very disappointing. Very! I bought a couple of sweaters and a couple of shirts two years ago and they have piled up or torn. Last year, I bought a couple of shirts that did the same thing. I have since switched to Lands End for most new clothing purchases.
I know this post is a little “old,” but I was thinking about it this morning when my $160 pair of jeans ripped while I was getting into my van. I feel like clothes are hit or miss whether you spend a little or a lot on them. I remembershopping with my grandma as a little kid and she would do a very, very detailed “inspection” of every piece of clothing she bought for us or herself including tugging at seams and such. I remember being so mad and throwing a tantrum in Macy’s (at age 3 or 4) because she wouldn’t get me a dress I adored because she thought it was poorly made. I have a few Target cardigans that I’ve had for several years that are in great shape, but other things from there fall apart after a few washings. Same with some of the more expensive things my husband insisted on us buying this last wardrobe makeover: some are doing great, other pieces are already destroyed and they are less than 6 months old. Guess I need to call up my grandma and get pick her brain about buying clothes and how to look for quality before my next purchases!
just saw this movie. loved it. reminded me of this blog post that I had read several months ago. love it too.
Thanks, Jared!
